What strikes us, looking back, is the sheer originality. Work from this period is fascinating
because artists and programmers were required to work from a blank slate.
The territory was mostly unexplored, so by definition every move required originality.
One of my favourite examples is Liquid Language, a beautifully poetic hypercard stack,
created in 1989 by artist David Rokeby. In my opinion it’s almost a definitive
statement in nonlinear writing. You can download it here.
